Introduction to the Expacc website Expacc is an initiative for EXPanding ACCess to Safe Abortion Care. The site was created in 2001 at a conference in South Africa, organized by IHCAR (Division of International Health), Karolinska Institutet and Ipas, an American NGO working globally for preventing unsafe abortion. The conference addressed the problem of women's lack of access to safe abortion care even in countries where abortion is legal. The aim was to improve services by advancing the role of Midlevel providers (MLPs), i.e. midwives, nurses, clinical officers, physician assistants etc. in delivery of safe abortion care. The Expacc site was created to offer a forum for further discussion and exchange across country borders. It became a platform for strategies to make abortion services accessible for women according to their right and need.
The over all aim of Expacc is to address the unacceptably high numbers of deaths and injuries from unsafe abortion worldwide, especially in countries with hard abortion laws and insufficient reproductive health services. The strategy is to train and develop MLPs for service delivery in reproductive health and safe abortion care, but also to strengthen their capacity for policy development, advocacy and training.
